The Federal Traffic Council in UAE has put forth a new recommendation to make an addition to the law related to dangerous driving. According to this recommendation, a fine of Dh1000 will be charged to all motorists found eating or drinking inside cars while driving.

Official Statement on the Recommendation

According to Major General Mohammad Saif Ali Zafin who is the Assistant Commander in Chief of the Dubai Police for Operations, this recommendation will support the police and traffic authorities in determining the possible constituents of dangerous driving.

The recommendation at present highlights the following activities constituting dangerous driving:

  • Eating
  • Drinking
  • Applying Makeup
  • Head Scarves Wearing/Adjustment
  • Taking Selfies
  • Reading
  • Watching Television while driving
  • Smoking

Once the recommendation gets approved and implemented, a fine of Dh1000 will be charged to the offenders. Along with the fine, 12 Black Points will be issued against the license of the driver and the seizure of the vehicle will take place for one month.

Existing Penalties for Mobile Use while Driving

Major General Saif Ali Zafin stated that the use of mobile phones while driving is already prohibited even while waiting on the traffic signals. The violation results into Dh200 Fine and four Black Points issued against the license. He further added that applying makeup while driving or combing hair are even more dangerous actions than using mobile phones and the implementation of the new recommendation will certainly discourage the motorists from getting involved in such activities.
